Blog 6: Racial Discrimination in Sports

Blog 6: Racial Discrimination in Sports We have all heard of the names of sports teams and mascots. The Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, Miami Heat, and so on. Although, there are sports teams with names that are deemed extremely controversial and leaves me baffled at how they can approve such names. Below are some of the most controversial team names in the U.S. Ethiopian Clowns Dickinson State Savages Pekin High School Chinks Frisco Fighting Coons Coachella Valley High School Arabs Wahpeton Wops Orofino High School Maniacs The team names above remain as the most offensive ideas that can ever be approved. The Orofino High School Maniacs were just as controversial even though it was not targeted towards any race or sexuality. There is a 55-bed psychiatric hospital that is just half a mile away from Orofino High School. Mental health should NOT be mocked or discriminated just like how we have to respect race or sexuality. Sometimes Mental health is more important than physical healt...

Blog 5: Toxic Masculinity

Image
Toxic Masculinity "Toxic masculinity is a narrow and repressive description of manhood, designating manhood as defined by violence, sex, status and aggression. It’s the cultural ideal of manliness, where strength is everything while emotions are a weakness; where sex and brutality are yardsticks by which men are measured, while supposedly “feminine” traits—which can range from emotional vulnerability to simply not being hypersexual—are the means by which your status as “man” can be taken away." Above was a definition of toxic masculinity and it has been a way of defining certain "manly" attributes to a person. Except, this is confusing the way of thinking for those who see themselves as feminine or not 100% masculine. Mass media has made society think that men who wear a dress and act feminine aren't considered a man, but I tell you right now it is just a piece of clothing. Only you know yourself better than anyone and don't let society norms get the best ...

Blog 4: Age-discrimination

Image
Age-discrimination In my last blog post I discussed the issue regarding women's representation in the media. I touched base on the overall gender-discriminating backlash that women receive in the media in the modern world. What do you think of modern employers who make shaky decisions that are kind of questionable? For instance, what are your thoughts on under-qualified applicants snatching a job position from a heavily experienced applicant? What if I told you that the main problem here was age-discrimination towards the more experienced applicant? This is all true in an article by The Dallas Morning News. The only reason Tammy Dombeck (47-year-old experienced applicant) did not land the job is because of her age. I guess CBS 11 wanted to have a younger profile yet this does not make sense. Imagine working hard and gaining the experience you acquire and then a 24-year-old applicant with no qualifications is hired. So this whole situation was suspicious because you would obviousl...

Blog 3: Women's Representation in Media

Image
Women's Representation in Media Have you ever wondered how women are treated in the media compared to men? It disgusts me that there are people out there who will not tune in to a news story or podcast just because they are women. They think they are not so knowledgeable on topics that men should be experts at discussing and analyzing. For example, some people bash and harass female news anchors or pundits on a football newscast. We are all human and bleed the same blood so I do not see why viewers can get so heated and triggered about a woman voicing an opinion or even stating legitimate facts or statistics. It just boggles my mind.  The only genuine instance I can imagine with angry viewers bashing a female reporter is when she misinforms the audience. See now this makes sense because this is an acceptable thing that happens quite often with several news anchors but they correct themselves on media platforms and make sure that they caught themselves. To move forward as a s...

Blog 2: How Privileged Are You?

Image
How Privileged Are You?  Have you ever noticed or compared your own life to others? As rude as it sounds, a lot of people don't realize that others have different lives and on different standings. The Black Lives Matter movement really sparked the controversy regarding "privileged issues." This is usually aimed at white people because of a big chunk of those who are privileged that fall under that race. As a white person myself, I can see where some people are coming from. That is not to say that all white people are privileged though. You don't know everyone's background and where they come from. On the other hand, I strongly believe that "systematic racism" is a thing and is still in place as of right now. This occurs when an employer will hire a white applicant instead of a person of color. Scenarios like that I believe is still being thrown around in the world. BLM really flipped the switch (ironically) on who is being victimized during this time w...

Blog 1: Media Conglomeration

Image
Blog 1 Media Conglomeration The year is 2020 and the world revolves and functions around money. What's even better than one single corporation generating big amounts of revenue? A large corporation owning smaller companies to increase their revenue income would be the answer. In the business world it's common sense that you would want to somehow eliminate competition by merging with other companies. Therefore, this gives the large corporation a boost in booming business. One big corporation, such as Time Warner, would own all of the businesses that they took over: Warner Bros, HBO, CNN, DC Comics, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network. Surprisingly, Time Warner Cable was bought out by Charter Communications.   The Illustration above shows how media conglomeration works. You can see that Disney, CBS, and NBC are the largest conglomerates in the world possessing entertainment and news channels. It just brought to my attention during our first discussion post that ESPN is owned by Disney, ...
