Media Conglomeration

The year is 2020 and the world revolves and functions around money. What's even better than one single corporation generating big amounts of revenue? A large corporation owning smaller companies to increase their revenue income would be the answer. In the business world it's common sense that you would want to somehow eliminate competition by merging with other companies. Therefore, this gives the large corporation a boost in booming business. One big corporation, such as Time Warner, would own all of the businesses that they took over: Warner Bros, HBO, CNN, DC Comics, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network. Surprisingly, Time Warner Cable was bought out by Charter Communications.

The Illustration above shows how media conglomeration works. You can see that Disney, CBS, and NBC are the largest conglomerates in the world possessing entertainment and news channels. It just brought to my attention during our first discussion post that ESPN is owned by Disney, and I had no idea. Also, should I even be surprised since Disney basically buying out every company. Although, Disney cured the "awkward gap" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). So, we all know how Disney owns Marvel Studios when it comes to Captain America, Iron Man, The Avengers, and so on. On the other hand, films like X-Men/Wolverine and Deadpool were owned by 20th Century Fox, while Spider-Man films were controlled by Sony.

On March 20th, 2019, Disney bought 20th Century Fox and plan to rename it to 20th Century Studios in the near future. This means that the X-Men/Wolverine and Deadpool films will now be under Marvel Studios since this studio is also owned by Disney. So when bigger corporations set out to buy other companies, they allow flexibility those smaller companies to take control of what is brought in. It is almost like a big happy family.
